Cyber Armies

Iranian Cyber army attacks Chinese internet search engine “Baidu.” Blank screens appear instead of chinese characters. A nation is irritated with the invasion of cyberspace.

Days later Google announces it was similarly attacked – but this time by a Chinese brigade of hackers, determined to thwart the work of human rights activists.  http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/8455712.stm They consider ending operations in China. China says it will not be dictated to by American upstart.

Is it just me, or has a whole new front emerged?  Not being the most technocratic of people I find this puzzle a difficult one to work out.  Could it be that the “cyber army” is a reality that very few have yet to register. Thinking about it, it’s only a natural step. Governments want to keep an eye on the goings on of other governments. That has been a reality since time immemorial. And once you’ve got the capacity to see – I imagine (and this is pure supposition based on rational thinking rather than technical knowledge) it’s not too far a step to act, and counter attack. China and Iran are the most obvious. But what about the UK and US, are they building up their cyber-armies too?  I imagine they’d be stupid not to.

And it’s not simply limited to governments. It seems that renegade brigades are emerging. You too can join a cyberarmy!http://www.cyberarmy.net/my/

Inside Gaza – a rare insight

As Gaza is cut off – it’s very difficult to hear the stories from ordinary people trapped inside the strip. After Operation Cast Lead, B’Tselem found a very nifty way of doing this. They gave 15 young volunteers a camera and asked them to document life. The results have been compiled and are well worth a look…

<B’Tselem is an Israeli human rights group set up in  1989 by a group of prominent academics, attorneys, journalists, and Knesset members. “It endeavors to document and educate the Israeli public and policymakers about human rights violations in the Occupied Territories, combat the phenomenon of denial prevalent among the Israeli public, and help create a human rights culture in Israel.” >
